History

In the spring of 2015, twelve young men answered a call. They came with different swings and vastly different tolerances, bound by a single conviction: that somewhere out there was a cup worth suffering for. They were in their mid-twenties, eager to take on the world, and the corner of the world they chose was Mount Pleasant, Michigan. They did not know what they were getting into. None of us did.

The early campaigns were brutal. There were no handicaps then, and the results were the kind the history books politely call “decisive.” Only later — older, and somewhat wiser — did we level the playing field: for fairness, for competition, and to #GrowTheGame.

Twelve years of campaigns have followed, across Michigan and into Virginia, Wisconsin, and the Carolinas. Men married. Men had children. Men relocated. Some hung up their spikes, and new men stepped forward to take their place in the line. But every year, when the orders come down from the commish — Tadas A., who was there at the beginning — the men report for duty.

They come back for the golf, sure. For the wild shirts, the team names, the hoons. But mostly they come back for each other: brothers in golf, marching forward through life, forging bonds that cannot be broken by mortals — or by a four-putt. This is the Rowdy Cup.

The Cup

They say a trophy is just metal. The men who have carried this one home know better. One cup, two teams, and three hundred sixty-five days of consequences for the side that loses it. Alongside the cup, honors are bestowed each year for acts of valor and — more often — for acts we have all agreed never to fully explain. The full record stands in the Awards.

Format

Two teams, four or five rounds of match play, one point per match. Every format the cup has been played in, drawn from the annals — click one for the rules:

Best Ball Everyone plays their own ball; the better score counts. 11 cups

Both partners play their own ball from tee to cup. On each hole the team counts its better net score, and that best ball goes head to head against the other side’s best ball in match play.

Kicker variant (2015–2019): when the best balls tie, the partners’ second balls — the kickers — break the tie instead of the hole automatically halving.

Scramble One team ball: pick the best shot and both play from there. 12 cups

Both partners tee off, the team picks the better ball, and both play their next shot from that spot. Repeat until the ball is holed — the team records a single score and the match is scored hole by hole.

Stroke play variant: the same scramble, but decided by total strokes for the round rather than holes won.

Shamble Best drive, then every man for himself into the hole. 9 cups

Both partners tee off and the team picks the better drive. From there each player plays his own ball into the hole, and the team’s better net score counts against the other side.

3 Club variant: the same shamble, except each player picks just three clubs (plus putter) for the round and plays every shot with those.

Cutthroat variant: played three sides at once instead of head to head, so every hole has a team to beat — and two teams trying to beat you.

Singles One on one, mano a mano. 8 cups

Straight one-on-one match play. Win more holes than the man across from you — no partner to bail you out.

Played in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026

Stableford Points per hole — a blow-up hole only costs you so much. 2 cups

Each player scores points on every hole based on his net score against par — more points for birdies and better, nothing for a blow-up. Highest points total wins the match, so one bad hole never sinks the round.

Played in 2017, 2018

Low Low Both balls count — no hiding behind your partner. 2020

Both partners play their own ball and both scores count: the low balls face off and so do the second balls, so a team has to bring two good scores to win the hole outright.

The handicap each man plays off, the strokes it buys him and how a tied cup is settled are all in the rules, along with the years each of them worked differently.
